5 Ways Design Can Make or Break Your Manufacturing/Life Sciences Business

My job is to execute on the strategies companies have invested their time and resources into, so that those strategies are as effective as possible. I do this by looking at the company's strategic brand style and making sure any number of assets are aligned, consistent, and eye-catching.

Stopping people from scrolling past you and getting their eyes on your marketing materials is half the battle. Then your sales people can kick in and do the rest!

Design is everywhere in business, and it can make or break your company. Here are five ways bad graphic design can hold your team back and five ways it can drive you to the next level.

Employee Recruitment and Retention: A Worker Shortage OR A Huge Opportunity?

Branding design can tell us a lot about a company, and what it might be like to work there.

What story is your brand saying? Maybe it’s “we made this logo thirty years ago and haven’t cared enough to update it since then,” OR maybe it’s “we’re so excited about the future of our company that we’ve reinvested in our logo to update it for the current times.”

People want to join a team that has a strong vision, is investing in its future, and looks good doing it.

If your company hopes to build its team and retain it, we may start at the root and look at your brand identity design. We may look at your recruitment materials (brochures, trade show graphics, social media, billboards, etc.) as well as the different ways your employees use and interact on a day to day basis with your brand (sell sheets, E-Newsletters, promotional swag, signage, and etc.)

Loyalty: A One-And-Done Client OR A Lifelong Partner?

The world is bigger than ever, and so is the marketplace. Why should people keep coming back to you?

It’s basic psychology: people trust familiarity.

One way a company can nurture familiarity is through being consistent— and graphic design can really help.

If your company wants customers more loyal to them than robin is to batman, we may look into how consistently your branding is being applied across different mediums (are those E-Newsletters going out designed in your branding? Or are they using the default fonts and colors that it came with?) We might also look for opportunities to reinforce your branding— showing up on social media feeds, at tradeshows, billboards, and more to remind everybody who you are and why you’re so great.

Communication: Muddied Waters OR Crystal Clarity?

Manufacturing and life sciences are highly technical fields, and a lot of information has to be exchanged for business to flow smoothly and efficiently. Design can help present data and key talking points by putting visual language to use— with graphics, iconography, visual hierarchy, and color— so that your team can digest and share information.

If your company is struggling with inefficiency or miscommunication, we may look into the tools you use to communicate with each other and with your clients— sell sheets, brochures, internal and external e-newsletters, decks, signage, and more.

Product Awareness: Radio Silence OR Ready to Be Seen?

You can invent the next best thing since sliced bread, but if nobody knows about it, what’s the point? Design strategy helps cut through the noise by creating a distinct visual identity for your company— one that communicates who you are and why that’s exciting.

If your company is looking for ways to get its product out there, we may look into marketing elements like your social media graphics, billboards, advertisements, trade show graphics, and my favorite— promotional swag!

Trust: Sketchy or Solid?

The stakes can get high in the manufacturing and life science industries. Clients and customers need to know they’re working with companies that keep a high standard of quality and performance. And while you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, in this case, you just can’t risk it.

Clean, consistent, up-to-date design reflects well on a company. It communicates that your business is professional and proactive about its operations.

If your company wants to increase trust with clients and customers, we might look into your brand identity strategy as well as its implementation across all of your company’s materials— from social media graphics to sell sheets.
